The End of an Era: Windows 10 Reaches End of Life and End of Support

Windows 10, one of Microsoft’s most popular operating systems, is reaching its end of life and end of support. This transition marks a big change for both users and businesses. We will go over what end of life means, its importance for users, and the steps you should take to prepare.

Windows 10, released in July 2015, was and still is the go-to operating system for users worldwide, with a 60.33% market share over Windows 11’s 36.65%. With its user-friendly interface, frequent updates, and security features, Windows 10 has been a great operating system for both personal and professional use. Since its release, Microsoft has put out many updates and improvements. Since then, 10 years have passed, and Microsoft is retiring support for Windows 10 as it reaches its end of life.

What is End of Life and End of Support?

End of Life (EOL):

  • EOL refers to the point at which Microsoft will no longer provide updates or Support for Windows 10. The EOL date for Windows 10 is October 14, 2025. After October 14, 2025, new features, updates to security, and bug fixes will no longer be provided.

End of Support:

  • End of Support means that Microsoft will no longer be providing technical support, software updates, or security patches for Windows 10. With the absence of these updates, systems that are still using Windows 10 will be more sensitive to security risks. Two types of support are under the support umbrella: Mainstream Support and Extended Support.
    • Mainstream Support includes feature updates and security patches, while extended support only focuses on security updates. Windows 10 will transition from mainstream support to extended support in 2025.
    • Extended support will still be offered for an additional year for $30 for users still interested in receiving security updates for Windows 10. Extended support will be provided to users for three years after EOL.

What this means for Users

Security Risks:

  • Windows 10 systems are more susceptible to malware, viruses, and other cyber threats without regular security updates. Cybercriminals attack outdated systems more frequently because they know that there are more vulnerabilities to take advantage of.

Software Compatibility:

  • As software developers focus on newer operating systems, new applications, and updates might no longer be compatible with Windows 10. This can cause a loss of access to the latest features and improvements in software.

Compliance Issues:

  • Businesses that are required to adhere to regulatory standards can face compliance issues if they are using an operating system that is not supported. Regulations require that businesses that fall under this blanket use supported and up-to-date software to ensure data security and integrity are met.

Performance Degradation:

  • Over time, the performance of Windows 10 systems can degrade because they are not optimized for updates. Degradation can lead to slower performance and reduced productivity.

But can I still use Windows 10 after October 14th?

Yes! Windows 10 will continue to work even if you do not pay for extended support. Your computer will not just cease to function. However, over time, you will find that software vendors will have less support for Windows 10, and patches and updates will no longer be available.

How to Prepare

  1. Upgrade to Windows 11: Microsoft recommends upgrading to Windows 11, the most current operating system, which offers enhanced features and continued support. Windows 11 includes a redesigned interface, improved performance, and new security features to protect your business from security threats. Most computers built within the last 5-7 years will be upgradeable to Windows 11.
  2. Backup Your Data: Before making any changes, make sure all your important data is backed up to prevent any loss of information. Cloud storage or an external drive is one way to back up your data. These solutions help protect your data by keeping backups of your files.
  3. Check System Requirements: Make sure your hardware meets the requirements for Windows 11 to guarantee an easy transition. Windows 11 has hardware requirements listed on its website, which include a compatible processor, sufficient RAM, and TPM 2.0 support. To see if a Windows 10 device is eligible to upgrade to Windows 11, follow one of these options: Download and run the PC Health Check app. Download the Microsoft PC Health Check App
  4. Plan for Training: If you’re managing a business, consider providing training for employees to teach them about the new operating system. Training can help minimize disruptions and ensure a smooth transition. Training can include but is not limited to tutorials, workshops, and hands-on practice sessions.
  5. Evaluate Software and Hardware Compatibility: Ensure all your software and hardware are compatible with Windows 11. Some older applications and devices may not be supported, so it’s vital to identify and address any potential problems ahead of time.
  6. Develop a Migration Plan: Create a plan for migrating your systems to Windows 11. Include timelines, resource allocation, and contingency plans. Creating a plan in advance can help ensure an efficient transition.

End of life (EOL) and end of Support for Windows 10 is a significant event that requires careful planning and preparation. By understanding what EOL means and taking proactive steps, you can ensure a smooth transition to a supported operating system such as Windows 11 and continue to use a secure and efficient computing experience. Embracing the change to Windows 11 can also provide you access to new features and improvements that can enhance your productivity and security.

But I REALLY don’t like change!

Sorry Bucko, but change is inevitable. There was a lot of controversy over switching from incandescent lights to compact fluorescents and then to LED lights. Who uses incandescent lights anymore? Very few, and typically for special purposes. Why? Led lights are a whole lot better. Can your old incandescent lights change colors? How often do your LED light bulbs burn out and need to be replaced? How about the power usage? If you are old enough to have gone into a major lighting store, you would have felt all the heat from the light bulbs.

That said, the Windows 11 user interface, in my opinion, is only marginally different from Windows 10. Here are some of the major differences you may notice.

  • Windows 11 introduces a fresh, modern design with a centered Start menu and Taskbar, giving it a more streamlined and Mac-like aesthetic.
  • The interface features rounded corners, pastel colors, and a cleaner overall look.
  • Users will also notice improved productivity features, such as Snap Layouts and Snap Groups, which make multitasking more intuitive by allowing users to easily organize open windows.
  • Windows 11 integrates Android apps natively through the Microsoft Store, enhancing the app ecosystem and providing more versatility.
  • Performance and security have also been enhanced in Windows 11. The new operating system requires more stringent hardware specifications, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, which contribute to better security and system stability.
  • Gamers will appreciate the improved gaming experience with features like DirectStorage and Auto HDR, which offer faster load times and better visuals.

Overall, Windows 11 offers a more polished and cohesive user experience, with significant upgrades in design, productivity, and performance compared to Windows 10.
