How to get 7-Zip to save its File Associations in Windows 7 and Server 2008

How to get the file associations to work with 7-zip in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2.

I have been asked a lot of questions about how to get the file associations to work with 7-zip in Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2.

The problem is you can go into the 7-zip File Manager options, select all the file extensions, press ok and it never saves the settings.

The fix is very simple, run 7-zip as administrator by right clicking on its start menu shortcut and selecting “Run As Administrator”. Now the 7-zip settings will save properly.

Just an additional 2 cents…I love 7-Zip, It works really well, few flaws, very efficient, has a small footprint and it is very in-expensive. We often deploy the tool with Group Policy. I have still not figured out how to deploy the file associations with Group Policy. If anyone knows how, please let me know.
