The DNS (Domain Name System) is one of the most important systems on the Internet. Its main function is to translate between domain names and IP addresses and to list the MTA (mail transfer agent) accepting e-mail for each domain. Think of it like the white pages for the Internet. The DNS is a hierarchical database that manages the Internet namespace, distributed over thousands of servers worldwide. This namespace is divided into zones, of which each is under the responsibility of independent administrators. For additional details on DNS look at the BIND documentation

| DNS This tool lets you query the domain name system for information. If you want to see the IP addresses a hostname maps to, enter the hostname and select A (IP4 address) from the pull-down menu. To see the host names that an IP address claims to be, enter the IP address and select PTR (Reverse DNS) from the pull-down menu. To check the SPF records for a domain, enter the domain and select TXT (used for SPF and DKIM) from the pull-down menu. In the results, the TTL column shows how many seconds our DNS server will cache the answer for before asking the authoritative name servers for a new value. Technical Details This tool uses our caching DNS server, so the view you see here is what a typical user may see. If you've recently changed your DNS records you may still see the old values returned here, from cache, the same way as they may be cached by other ISPs. We rewrite some queries a little. If you ask for a PTR record for something that looks like an IP address (v4 or v6) we rewrite it into the appropriate form for resolving reverse DNS. Because, well, that's almost always what you want. Blacklist Tool Help This tool will check a number of email blacklists to see if they are listing the given IP address as a source of unwanted email. To use it you must enter the IP address mail is sent from into the "Enter an IP" box. We don't support entering a hostname into this tool as there's seldom much connection between the domain name someone might enter and the IP address mail related to that domain is actually sent from. If you want to see if your mailserver is listed, you'll need to do a little work to find the IP address of that mailserver, but it's much more accurate that way, trust us. At the left of each list, you'll see a green disk, a red disk or no disk at all. If the disk is green, it's all good. If it's red, then that blacklist is listing the IP address as a source of unwanted email and it's a problem the owner of the address should cons |

| Sam Spade |
| This tool is the original Sam Spade tool that's been running for nearly five years. It's been rewritten from scratch four times since it first appeared, but still does the same things It takes a hostname or an IP address, guesses at the domain name, and then runs some whois queries to find out who owns the domain and the block of IP addresses it lives in, and traces the route packets take to the host. It's slow, crufty, returns less information and has more bugs than the newer tools, but it's still handy to have around. A lot of spam includes pointers to websites. Often the URL is obfuscated in a variety of ways - by using %-encoded characters, bogus authentication information, IP addresses written in strange ways This tool will decode any legal URL, showing you how it was obfuscated, what the real URL looks like and who hosts the website. This is a secure web browser. It doesn't pass any information about you, it won't accept cookies, it won't run any JavaScript, any ActiveX or Java applets. It won't even reveal the IP address you're connecting from. Enter a URL, such as http://samspade.org/ssw/ into the box and hit Go. You'll see the raw http response from the server Any links, redirects or frames in the original webpage will be shown as active links. Some interesting constructs in the web page will be highlighted. The downsides are that some websites will refuse to show you any content without a cookie - and there's no way to accept a cookie, the HTML isn't parsed particularly carefully, so some links may not be active, and authentication isn't supported yet. This tool checks the reverse DNS for the 256 addresses surrounding the one you're looking at. It shows the hostname claimed for each address (if any) and checks for forged and bogus reverse DNS. (If reverse DNS gives a hostname which doesn't exist, it's described as bogus. If the hostname does exist, but doesn't resolve to the original IP address it's described as forged.) |
